Your Bi-Monthly Guide to the Simple Life From Marla and Lisa
January / February 2007

The beginning of the year comes with the intention of changing our lives and habits so we can participate more fully in life. Many believe that if they could just get organized, the rest of their lives would fall into place. Others believe that if their significant other would just get organized, the rest of their relationship would be smooth. But how many of us in a relationship have actually ever broached the subject of organization and how it affects the relationship?

As I write this column, it is Valentines Day. A day centered on chocolate, red hearts and love. A day about people who are committed to one another and to a future.
Similarly, in January Clear & SIMPLE™ participated in a Bridal Show, again about two people who are looking to a future together and the happiness that it will bring.

As participants and observers in these rituals we asked ourselves - How many of us have ever discussed organization or organization styles as a couple? It is not necessarily a subject that comes up for discussion until it becomes an issue. We want to help you take a preemptive strike now - help you to be proactive and provide you with a new way to strengthen your relationship.

I want to share with you today, some ideas generated by Kelly Pratt, a Clear & SIMPLE™ associate, about organizing as it applies to couples.

    SEE IT

couple2Take a few minutes to determine where you are in relation to the space that you share with each other and what your individual organizing styles are.

    Ask the following questions:

    1. What are my individual organizing strengths?
    2. What are my organizing weaknesses?
    3. What is our vision of our space?
    4. What are some thing we need to acquire or get rid of?

    MAP IT

"Map" is an acronym for "Make a Plan". As you create a household that accommodates you as a couple, take some time to plan how you will make your vision a reality.

Some examples of maps you might create:

    • Draw a diagram of where everything will go in your living space.
    • Create a collage that represents the vision of your space
    • Make an actual written list of your needs and wants

    DO IT

Once you have taken the time to SEE IT and MAP IT, it is time to actually DO IT.

Utilize the Clear & SIMPLE™ system of S.T.A.C.K.S.™ to implement the vision of your space. Use the MAPS you created to implement your vision as a couple. Working together as a couple, you can use each others strengths to create a winning combination of styles!

Remember that organizing is a process. You will likely have to revisit your space and systems periodically to maintain an environment that supports you both.

    Marla's Message
    marla

I have spoken to audiences of all different sizes and types for many years about getting organized. And without fail, when it comes time to ask questions, the first question is “what if I have married / or work with / the opposite of me?" I want to laugh and cry at the same time because this organizing challenge is the biggest one out there! We are dedicating this issue of Simple Said to offering hope. I want to say – start with a sit down, get real, from the heart session with the meaningful people in your life. Share what your preferences are when it comes to your environment and daily life. Do you need everything out or all put away? Do you need 30 minutes to yourself before you are hit with interruptions? Take an hour or two this month and show your love & support in a new way. And, don’t forget – you can always call a Professional Organizer and ask for help!
